We have the opportunity to drive through one of the most beautiful mountain pass in South Africa Magoebaskloof en route and see one of the vibrant and sustainable project Thusanang (helping one another). Thusanang has over 100 sustainable preschools affiliated to the Trust. Each preschool is run by the volunteer practitioner and a committee of community volunteers.

The community accommodation adjacent to the Kruger National Park is the initiative of the late chief of the Mdului community. Overnight in Fairtrade accommodations Umlani Bush Camp, Tsitsikama Lodge, Hogg Hollow, Spier, Daddy’s Long Leggs, eco-friendly Nkambeni Tented, Bulembu Lodge and fairtrade community owned Masakala Lodge.

TOUR INFORMATION

Day to day program: 23 days/ 22 nights
1st day: Johannesburg
After your arrival at Johannesburg Int. Airport, you meet our local representative who will explain you the details. You will be transferred to your guesthouse in Melville, a cosy suburb in Johannesburg.
After you acclimatised, you can explore the nearby area, the shops and restaurants.  

2nd day: After breakfast, you will be collected for the start of your guided tour to the Cradle of Humankind – a World Heritage Site. The Cradle of Humankind comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic  limestone caves containing the fossilised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids.
Our  tour takes us to the Sterkfontein caves ,the world’s richest hominid site, renowned for studies on fossilized fauna, wood and stone used in the past .Maropeng – the origins , a visitor centre in the cradle gives an insight into the history of the area and panoramic views of the cradle can be experienced. Still in the cradle, we visit either the Wonder Caves ,a natural wonder 2 200million years old or the old Kromdraai  Gold mine, one of the oldest Gold mines in the reef dating back to 1881. After your tour you are dropped of at your guesthouse in Melville. Overnight Johannesburg, Melville

Optional: you can choose to go on a guided tour into Soweto, a former Township, and now a thriving City. For today, you will live the “township” life. You can listen to Kwaito; South Africa's answer to American Hip Hop and visit a local shebeen (illicit liquor bar). Visit Soccer City – Home to the 2010 World Cup final,  the Hector Peterson Memorial, the homes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, both Nobel peace prize-winners and other famous sites.

3rd &4th day: Johannesburg– Tzaneen   (ca. 375 km)
This morning you can have your car delivered in your guesthouse.  You leave the busy heart of South Africa and travel to the Limpopo Province. En route you pass Polokwane (formerly know as Pietersburg) and you drive via on one of South Africa’s most beautiful mountain passes; the Magoebaskloof. En route you can optionally choose to visit one of the vibrant projects at the Thušanang association. Thusanang is a non Profit Organization focuses on the training and capacity development education of rural women. Thusanang has over 100 sustainable preschools affiliated to the Trust. Each preschool is run by the volunteer practitioner and a committee of community volunteers. After you visited Thusanang you continue to Tzaneen, one of the most fertile region with tropical and subtropical agriculture taking place in a 20,000 km˛ region. Stay 2 nights in Tzaneen

5th day: Tzaneen – Orpen Gate ( border Kruger National Park)   (ca. 115 km)
Today you can have a drink inside a 6000 year old Baobab tree and visit the Modjadji Cycad Nature Reserve; a unique natural forest in its prehistoric state, named after the dynasty of Rain Queens, Modjadji. You continue in direction of the Orpen Gate near the famous Kruger National Park where you overnight 2 nights in unique and thatched Treehouse Lodges.

Luxury tour: Overnight in traditional African reed and thatch huts, in the philosophy of simplistic luxury and getting back to nature in the authentic FTTSA accredited Umlani Bushcamp, All the things done at Umlani Bush Camp is the result of the  influenced by the level of commitment to responsible tourism. Fair Trade operation such as fair wages and working conditions; fair distribution of benefits; and respect for human rights, culture and the environment in Greater National Kruger Park. Dinner and a guided game drive in open land rover are included.

6th day: Today you can have a wildlife experience in Big Five territory; spot the Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard and the Buffalo. For those who prefer a guided game drive in open Land Rovers, or participate in guided bush walks with rangers and trackers; these excursions can be booked via your accommodation.

7th day: Numbi Gate/Paul Kruger gate (border Kruger National Park) via Panorama route (ca. 290 km)
Via the Panorama route with highlights as Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window you drive in direction of Mariette Mkhuhlu, Belfast inside the Kruger National Park. The entrance to the lodge is through the Kruger National Park’s Numbi Gate close to White River and Hazyview. You overnight 2 nights in luxurious Nkambeni Tented  Lodge.

8th day: Today you can relax or go into the national Kruger National Park. Guided excursions can be booked via your accommodation.

9th day: Numbi Gate/Kruger Park– Swaziland (ca. 300 km)
Today you leave the former Transvaal and drive to the beautiful kingdom of Swaziland. This is a trip you will remember! After customs, you continue to Bulembu ghost mining village. You can choose to overnight in Bulembu Lodge where in the evening traditional Swazi dancers from nearby villages perform for guests at the lodge Bulembu is all about sustainability both from an enterprise point of view as well as natural habitation. The lodge has just taken part in a competition with USAID for seed capital and was complimented for the work it does to be self-sustaining as well as for it’s great waste management solutions. From sending away glass to the Ngwenya glass factory to supporting a local lady from the Ncencene Village. By funding her to start her own chicken business she now supplies the lodge with free range/organic chickens. Also most of the vegetables are grown in Bulembu’s own garden  - pesticide free. Overnight Bulembu Lodge.

10th day: Today you can visit the capital Mbabane, the Swazi market and a local school where you can meet the children and teachers. You overnight in the Mililwane Wildlife Sanctuary, depending on your tour choice in traditional grass-dome shaped beehives or a unique hilltop lodge. Here you can book optional excursions to discover Swaziland: guided game-drive, mountain bike or horse ride via your accommodation.

11th day: Swaziland – Zululand (ca. 275 km)
Today you will leave Swaziland and travel through the sugarcane fields to Zululand. Zululand is an area that once was ruled by the famous Zulu king Shaka. You have guided walking tour into a cultural traditional village. Depending on your tour choice you have dinner and overnight in a rondavel within the local community or stay overnight in a lodge near Hluhluwe which is well known for its eco-friendliness. A small part of the accommodation costs go towards local projects which the lodge supports.
 
12th day: Today you can visit a Cheetah and Serval project in Hluhluwe. You have the rest of the day to discover the long empty beaches in the Elephant coast area. As well as spending your day to discover the magnificent Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National park and the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park - a World Heritage Site. Walk along the long empty beaches in the Elephant coast area or hike and look for Rhino's. Via your accommodation you can book optional excursions:  guided boat tour, canoe trail, surfing, snorkelling, guided open vehicle game drive and walking trails.

13th day: Zululand – Scottburgh (ca. 342 km)
Drive via the coast towards Scottburgh; an area with irresistible attraction that offers a wide selection of things to see and d. Relax and enjoy the scenery on one of the world safest beaches,  the Blue Flagged beach of Hibberdene. The voluntary eco-label Blue Flag, is given to beaches that meet 14 criteria spanning three aspects of coastal management: water quality, environmental education and information, and safety and services, which include excellent life-saving standards, top-rate parking and sparkling ablution facilities. Overnight in Blue Marlin Hotel 

14th day: Scottburgh – Southern Drakensberg (ca. 300 km)
Today you drive via the Eastern part of Griqualand Kokstad. Natal Southern Parts and Mount Currie to Southern Drakensberg. En route you can visit the enthusiast Pholela Primary School in the little rural village. Continue to Matatiele where you overnight in Masakala Guesthouse. From the guesthouse you have stunning views of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage Site. Superb rock art is high among its special attractions. Visit the Main Caves Museum for an insight into the past life of the San People. The Ukhahlamba/Drakensberg Park has exceptional natural beauty  in it’s soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and   golden sandstone ramparts. Rolling high altitude grasslands, the   prestine steep sided river valleys and rocky gorges also contribute   to the beauty of the  site. Overnight 2 nights in traditional rondavels in FTTSA accredited Masakala Guesthouse; comfortable in stunning scenery and the warm welcome of Xhosa, Sotho and Pedi cultures. Dinner is included, if you want you can assist in preparing the traditional dishes.

15th day: Today is at leisure or you can go on optional excursions: guided village tours, horse riding, hiking or visit rock art painting. The excursions can be booked from your accommodation. You can choose to extend your holiday with a hiking trail which traverses spectacular mountainous foothills and rural villages, taking in visits to ancient rock-art, sparkling streams, indigenous trees, medicinal plants, craft projects and top of the world views.

16th day: Southern Drakensberg – Coffee Bay  (ca. 390 km)
Leave Kwa Zulu Natal and continue to Coffee Bay where you overnight on walking distance from the beach. You drive via hilly roads, through the Eastern Cape, former Transkei & Siskei, homelands of the Xhosa’s. You can visit the Nelson Mandela museum in Umtata; the capital of formal Transkei and Nelson Mandela his birth town Qunu.

17th day: Coffee Bay –East Londen (ca. 250 Km)
Drive to East Londen where you overnight. From your accommodation you can explore the area, relax at the beach. Alternatively visit one of the projects offered by award winning Imonoti tours, like the Mdtsane Arts centre. Mdantsane Arts Centre is located in Mdantsane, a suburb near East London, Eastern Cape. The project has been running since the end of 2004. Mdantsane Arts Centre is a community project that empowers youth in different skills, painting, leather works, bead work, music, drama, dance, ceramics, etc. Visitors: are welcome and offered entertainment in the different skills. Visitors can see the craft workshop and can buy the crafts.

18th day: East Londen - Port Elizabeth (ca. 275 km)
Drive along the Eastern Cape via Grahams Town (the city of Angels) to Port Elizabeth, where you overnight.  In the afternoon you join Calabash Tours on a FTTSA accredited guided Shebeen Tour; you can experience the diversity of townships and enjoy unbeatable African hospitality when relaxing at a Shebeen for drinks and dinner. Alternatively you can choose to visit the city of Port Elizabeth and its  Blue Beaches or visit Addo Elephant Park.

19th day: Port Elizabeth- Knysna (ca. 340 km)
Drive via the garden route to Knysna, a small cosy town on the lagoon with a special holiday atmosphere, where you overnight. You have time to explore Knysna’s forest and beaches. You can optional join FTTSA accredited Stormsriver Adventures; a professional adventure and activity company based in the heart of the Tsitsikamma Forest, on exclusive hiking trials and excursions into Tsitsikamma National Park.
Luxury tour: Overnight at FTTSA accredited Hog-Hollow country lodge; set on the edge of an indigenous forest in a private nature reserve with panoramic views of the surrounding indigenous forests, valleys and mountains.

20th day: Knysna – Oudtshoorn  (ca. 125 km)
Drive via the impressive Outeniqua pas to Oudtshoorn; the ‘Ostrich City’, where you overnight. You can see, drive and taste these Ostriches. You can visit the Cango Caves and drive along the rough Swartberg pass.

21st day: Oudtshoorn – Stellenbosch (ca. 425 km)
Drive via route 62 to Swellendam, visit the old townhouse and relax in the tea gardens or visit the Drostdy museum; one of the most beautiful and oldest museums in South Africa. Continue via the wine area to Stellenbosch where you overnight.
Luxury tour: Overnight in village at FTTSA accredited Spier; simply yet elegantly appointed in traditional country style.

22nd day: Stellenbosch – Cape Town (ca. 60 km)
Today you can visit the wine area Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl. You can have an enchanting Cape African experience at historic FTTSA accredited Spier; a unique wine development in the world. Drive via the Cape Peninsula & Cape Point to Mother City Cape Town where you overnight.

23rd day: Today you can explore the Cape Area; climb Table Mountain, Visit Robben Island, relax in Kirstenbosch Gardens or alternatively visit one of the social and arts projects in Cape Area. Continue to your next destination or drive to Cape Town Int. Airport for flight home.
